What is DMR / NXDN / P25 ?
DMR, NXDN, and P25 are all digital standards for two-way radio communication, but they use different technologies to achieve spectrum efficiency and support features like voice and data. DMR uses two-slot Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) for use in a (12.5) kHz channel, NXDN uses Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) for much narrower (6.25) kHz channels, and P25 is primarily used by public safety, is flexible in its implementation, and uses various technologies like TDMA and FDMA to achieve efficiency.
Key Differences of Digital Protocols
| Feature | DMR | NXDN | P25 |
| Technology | Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) with two slots in a 12.5 kHz channel | Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) in a 6.25 kHz channel | Phase 1: Uses FDMA. Phase 2: Uses two-slot TDMA in a 12.5 kHz channel to double capacity. |
| Primary Users | Businesses, organizations of all sizes | Businesses, public safety, ham radio | Public safety, emergency services |
| Compatibility between different brands | Very high, widely adopted digital radio standard for DMR radios. | Very low, Kenwood (NEXEDGE) and Icom (IDAS) compatible radios only. | Very high, widely adopted digital radio standard for P25 radios. |
| Interoperability | Standardized to allow compatibility between different manufacturers, although different tiers exist. | Not natively compatible with other digital modes like DMR or P25 | Designed specifically for interoperability among different public safety agencies and equipment manufacturers. |
| Cost | Generally more cost-effective | Mid-range | Tends to be more expensive |
